OVERVIEW ABOUT THE MODELING INDUSTRY

Provide us with an overview of the modeling industry. How big is it? What are the opportunities available for a new and aspiring model? Modeling today is glamorous and exciting, challenging and competitive. Opportunities abound, yet being a model is not as easy as it seems.

A model can work in the following areas:

Commercial, print and catalogue modeling: anyone who work in these fields can earn anywhere from the low end of $100 to $300 an hour to the high end of $500 - $50,000 a day.

Print (editorial) models are those who pose for professional photographers, interpreting a certain theme or concept. The output is referred to as “photo shoots” and these are featured in fashion magazines as either cover or features in its pages.

Commercial print modeling: a rather select number of models, who were chosen to promote a particular product. The work of the model can be seen as either billboard, ads appearing on buses and on print publications.

Catalogue modeling: are those hired to appear in fashion catalogues and sell everyday products. A model for catalogue need not worry about height and body requirements as the need for a model in these areas maybe different from the usual model requirements.

Ramp modeling: the glamorous side of modeling, reserved to the so-called runway models. A ramp model needs to possess outstanding personality, the ability to stand out from the rest, show lots of confidence, grace and poise in front of a highly discriminating audience.

A ramp model need to pass rigid requirements: He should be at least 6’0” and has a great body built. A female ramp model must be at least 5'8".

The modeling industry is now a “global business”. Models are required to travel around the world for work; there they meet different clients, photographers, stylists and media experts. They are also expected to be ready for work at a moment’s notice.

I’ve been hearing a lot of new, unfamiliar words associated with modeling, could a brief description be made available to help us understand them better?

Composite cards: a specialized form of a model’s photos, basic measurements and contact information. It can be compared to a company’s brochure that shows the company’s products and its operations.

Portfolio Books: an editorial of images taken by various photographers. A standard book is 9x12 but lately it has reduced to standard letter sized or 8.5x11.

Tearsheets: After a print job (ad, brochure, catalogue) a model will take the actual page from the printed product and “tear” it out to put in his book.

Go-see: when a model “go and see” a client to show himself and present his modeling portfolio for work considerations.

Can an agency guarantee me work? NO agency CAN guarantee anything! They are only provide the means to the necessary go-sees. It's up to the client and the client, alone that can book a model for an assignment. However, if you fit the requirements of the client, you have a high-assurance to receive the "job."

How can someone become a top fashion model? Aside from the physical requirements of height, facial features, well-proportioned body and having a healthy disposition, a model can become highly successful if he has the following qualities:

Initiative: ability to act and seize every opportunity that goes his way.

Discipline: take control of his actions while focusing on accomplishing certain goals.

Digital photographers are generally preferred to film as the web is fastly becoming the number one way or marketing talent.

Why do a model need professional pictures? The modeling industry has always been heavily based on the utilization of photographs. All aspects of model scouting, promoting and booking require photographs. The modeling industry is extremely competitive and is used to working with particular standards of photography. Professional photography can help aspiring and professional models who want to improve their chances of getting noticed and looking their very best.

Can a model use my pictures from school? Traditional school portrait photography may not represent you in the best light. School portrait photographers specialize in making photos to be displayed in your home or given to friends and relatives. These are most likely not the type of photos that will help you in the field of modeling.

I can do my make up and hair - do I really need a makeup artist? Yes, while everyone can do a wonderful job on their own daily makeup, a professional makeup artist can develop a look and accentuate your features to bring out the best in you for every photo shoot. A professional make-up artist also knows how to style your hair to make sure it works with your clothes and the mood of the photo.

I am a guy - do I need makeup? For men it is called grooming. The makeup artist's job is to make you look your best. All people have different skin tones. The makeup artist specializes in evening out these tones to make your photographs look their best. They also work with your hair to bring out the best possible style for you and the photo shoot.

What should I do on the day of my shoot with my hair and makeup? You should arrive with clean, moisturized skin and clean hair-no products of any kind. This insures a clean canvas for the makeup artist to work with.

I don't use makeup-won't it cause problems with my skin? The makeup artist does everything they can to prevent any problems. They cleanse the skin before application and clean the makeup off after the shoot. As an added benefit the can also advise you on a skin care regimen that can benefit you.

I see the magazine covers/fashion spreads and the models look like they have no makeup on - why should I use it for my shoot? All of the models have makeup on. A skilled makeup artist applied makeup in such a way that it looks like there is no makeup on. REMEMBER makeup accentuates how you look. It brings out your best features.

Do kids have makeup on? Usually not. Kids are supposed to look like kids. Makeup can sometimes make them look older than they are. We start using makeup on girls at age 13 and grooming on boys around 16. But there are always exceptions to every rule.

How long is the photo session? That depends entirely on you. Normally for an adult male or female it should take, with clothing and makeup changes, approximately 2 hours. For children, the younger they are the quicker the session. This is to make sure that they don't get bored or tired. We want them at their best!

Do I need to bring props? No, the pictures are to advertise you, not the props. Sometimes they can be a distraction. You don't want to draw attention from you.

Do you provide clothes? No. Until you are sent to a photographer by and agency or a client, you will most likely need to bring your own clothes for the photo session.

What type of clothes should I bring?

  • First and foremost an outfit that you think makes you look really good.
  • Something you would wear if you were going out for the evening and wanted to cause a stir.
  • The clothes should fit well and not be baggy.
  • A classic suit or sports coat and slacks
  • Jeans and T-shirts
  • Khakis
  • Workout clothes
  • All types of shoes, sneakers, boots, dress shoes
  • Club clothes
  • For a more casual look khakis can give you that Gap/Abercrombie look.
  • For a more commercial look - a business suit can be effective.
  • You can bring a swimsuit - photographers may use it, they may not but it helps to have it. It should fit well and be flattering.
  • Fitted Underwear. Every male need a pair of "tighty-whities" in their models bag.
  • Colors are completely up to you. Textures, fabrics are all open to your choice.
  • The clothes should reflect all seasons, not just the season we are in.
  • Take a risk - try something bold
  • Bring your jewelry: big clunky pieces, as opposed to small jewelry.

None of these rules are carved in stone-they are just guidelines.

How many outfits should I bring? If you want to do 5 changes bring 10 outfits. It is always better to have too many outfits than not enough.

Should I tan before the shoot? A little color is good. You have to be very careful. Too much color is worse than none.

Should I practice before the shoot? Smiles - they should be natural. We will direct everything else. However, natural ability is key.

Do you use different backgrounds? Yes, we try to use as many backgrounds or settings as possible. This shows you in a wider variety of situations.

Do we go outside? Weather permitting.

Do we do pictures on location? The logistics involved in going on location make it difficult.

Will my pictures get used for anything other than my portfolio? After you sign a release form, which is mandatory for a photographer to release the images that they took of you to you, the photographer can use them in any manner they see fit. Don't do a shoot or enter the field of modeling if you're not willing to sign a release form.

How often do I need to have photos taken? As often as possible/practical/affordable. You are constantly changing. Your pictures are what represent you to the agencies. They need to be as accurate as possible.

What type of pictures do I need? A head shot - a picture from the shoulders up. This is the most important shot. It shows your personality, what you look like. This is the photo where your personality can shine through. The body shots are either full-length or 3/4. These pictures show what kind of shape you are in, how tall you are. The pictures can be fashion print, commercial print, catalog, advertising, editorial.

What if I reserve a photo session and need to cancel? Deposits are non-refundable. Photographers will be happy to re-schedule your session for you provided that you give them 72-hour notice. In the case of last-minute illness or emergency they will do their best to fill your slot with someone on our waiting list, but will not be able to refund your deposit if your slot is not filled.

Professional model management companies earn a commission from their model's earnings or by placing them with an agency that will guarantee the model assignments. It is our job to develop, manage, market and attempt to secure the right rate for models.
